The State of Mental Health in  Florida

Florida ranks 31st in the United States for mental healthcare. The Florida Council for Community Mental Health and the Florida Alcohol & Drug Abuse Association comprise the Florida Behavioral Health Association (FBHA). The FBHA aims to provide improved mental health resources to all residents via Information, Innovation, and Influence. Training therapists and psychologists ensures that residents will receive quality care. By increasing awareness, easing access to therapists, psychologists, and school counselors, and developing the workforce, Florida is armed with the resources to achieve their initiatives.

All in for Florida: Emergency Room Intervention Project

FBHA is continuously adding to projects and initiatives to bring better behavioral healthcare to their residents. One of these initiatives is the All in for Florida: Emergency Room Intervention Project. The aim behind this project is to create seamless processes between emergency rooms and treatments, providers, or therapists, for continued care. This project was developed because, of the 18,000 opioid-related ER visits in one year, only 10% of these patients continued their care. While emergency rooms are effective for immediate care, they do not provide the complex treatment and care needed for long-term recovery. The Emergency Room Intervention Project would create a bridge between these ER visits, and rehabilitation centers. You can learn more about the All in for Florida projects, here.

For assistance in navigating treatment for substance abuse in Florida, call SAMHSA’s Treatment Referral line at 1-800-662-HELP (4357). This line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If you are LGBTQ+ and you need support, contact The Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386.

NAMI Florida

The National Alliance for Mental Illness, or NAMI, is open to anyone struggling with mental illness. NAMI is an inclusive and community-based resource geared towards raising awareness and supporting group members on their journey to recovery. With group counseling sessions led by a trained member with a diagnosis (past or present), meetings follow a set of 12 principles for support. NAMI meetings are meant to complement your existing treatment plan with your counselor or psychologist.
