The State of Mental Health in Indiana
Indiana currently ranks 25th in the United States for mental healthcare. Indiana’s Division of Mental Health Addiction (DMHA) works to ensure resiliency and recovery throughout every community. The DMHA makes treatment accessible by providing financial support for those who are in need of mental healthcare. DMHA is also responsible for certifying all mental health agencies and addiction specialists. Currently, less than half of Indian’s residents who require mental healthcare are receiving the treatment or care that they need. Indiana’s Community Mental Health Centers (CMHC) were developed to bridge this gap. CMHCs serve those living under the poverty line and who would otherwise have limited access to care. According to the CMHC contract with the DMHA, and in accordance with Indiana code, these CMHCs are required to require a complete continuum of their mental healthcare and addiction services.
Due to Indiana’s challenges with substance abuse, the DMHA also allocates federal funds to various substance abuse prevention projects. Through education and prevention, and increased accessibility for those who need to speak with a counselor, therapist, or addictions specialist, the DMHA is hoping to see a decrease in the number of substance abuse and addiction cases.
