The State of Mental Health in Louisiana

Louisiana currently ranks 29th in the United States for mental healthcare. The Office of Behavioral Health - Mental Services (OBH) is responsible for transforming their current mental healthcare system, and for providing the resources needed to build resilience in their residents. By leveraging coordination between existing agencies, and allocating funding where it’s deemed most vital, the OBH is working on improving accessibility in all phases of mental illness, from prevention, to treatment and recovery. OBH ensures that all Louisiana residents have access to the resources that promote their well-being and ability to prosper. This includes access to therapists, psychologists, and counselors throughout the state.

You can find a seasoned specialist who can work with you through a wide array of mental health concerns, including but not limited to: drug abuse, thoughts of suicide, and severe or persistent mental illness. OBH has also ensured that all licensed professionals are culturally and clinically competent. Through timely, individualized, and effective treatment from these professionals, OBH believes that all Louisiana residents can cover from mental illness, and many already have. Through increasing accessibility by reducing financial barriers, destigmatizing via education, and addressing provider biases and encouraging integrative practices, OBH is working diligently towards the implementation of an effective public policy surrounding mental health issues.
