The State of Mental Health in Minnesota
Minnesota currently ranks 6th in the United States for mental healthcare. Their strong ranking is highly attributable to the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) and the peer-to-peer support groups made available through Mental Health Minnesota. While the state of mental healthcare in Minnesota is stellar compared to most of the United States, making services geographically accessible throughout the state remains a concern. The varying needs in each community indicates the importance of clients receiving care within their own community. To accomplish this, DHS is working to develop the workforce and fill in the gaps with local resources within each community.
Notable Programs in Minnesota
Minnesota System of Care is a culturally-responsive and youth-guided program developed specifically to assist children with mental illness, and their families. This integrative approach makes it easier for all of the agencies and providers involved in the child’s wellbeing to communicate and collaborate on the treatment plan. Another notable program is the Women’s Recovery Services. This program helps women in treatment abstain from alcohol and drugs. By helping these women become gainfully employed, stay out of the criminal justice system, have a roof over their head, and receive accessible physical and mental health services for themselves and their children. Women’s Recovery Services goes as far as delivering babies who test negative for substances at birth. Securing a relationship with a licensed counselor, therapist, or psychologist, reinforces accountability as these women work through their program.
