The State of Mental Health in Nebraska
Nebraska currently ranks 22nd in the United States for mental healthcare. The Division of Behavioral Health (DBH), under Nebraska’s Department of Health and Human Services (NDHHS) is responsible for the reformation of their current mental healthcare system, and for providing the resources necessary for recovery and resilience in their communities. The DBH looks for feedback from the public to design and develop the delivery of mental health services that determine the standard of care that all Nebraska residents can expect when they seek treatment from a licensed counselor or therapist.
The State Advisory Committee on Mental Health Services and the State Advisory Committee on Substance Abuse Services each meet three times a year to discuss the strengths and opportunities in the divisions they serve. Memberships are open to the public, and it is encouraged that those with lived experience participate by providing feedback. These committees look for ways to improve on accessibility in all phases of mental illness, from prevention, to treatment and recovery. The DBH works to ensure that all residents have access to the resources that promote their well-being and ability to prosper. This includes access to therapists, psychologists, and counselors throughout the state.
For assistance in navigating treatment for substance abuse, call the Drug & Alcohol Crisis Center at 402-475-5683.
If you are LGBTQ+ and you need support, contact The Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386.
