The State of Mental Health in New York

New York currently ranks 2nd in the United States for mental healthcare. The New York State Office of Mental Health (OMH) is responsible for continuously improving upon their current mental healthcare system, and for providing the resources necessary to build resilience in their communities. The OMH determines the standard of care that all New York residents can expect when they seek treatment from a licensed counselor or therapist. Through partnerships with various local nonprofit agencies and governments, the OMH has developed and/or implemented 4,500 programs. These programs serve over 700,000 individuals every year.

Currently, the OMH is working on the “5.07 Plan”, referencing the NYS mental hygiene law. This plan takes feedback from consumers, services, and programs, into account. The data in the 5.07 Plan is used by the OMH to help direct policies, planning, and priorities with the primary goal of improving upon accessibility in all phases of mental illness, from prevention, to treatment and recovery. The OMH ensures that all residents have access to the resources that promote their well-being and ability to prosper. This includes access to therapists, psychologists, and counselors throughout the state.

For assistance in navigating treatment for substance abuse, call NY Well at 1-888-NYC-WELL. This line is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If you are LGBTQ+ and you need support, contact The Trevor Project at 1-866-488-7386.
