The State of Mental Health in North Dakota

North Dakota currently ranks 15th in the United States for mental healthcare. The Behavioral Health Human Services (BHHA), is responsible for improving upon their current mental healthcare system, and for providing the resources necessary to build resilience within their communities. The BHHA works with the Department of Human Services to determine the standard of care that all North Dakota residents can expect when they seek treatment from a licensed counselor or therapist. Currently, the BHHA is working on strengthening the strong integrative care model, and improving on accessibility in all phases of mental illness, from prevention, to treatment and recovery. The BHHA ensures that all residents have access to the resources that promote their well-being and ability to prosper. This includes access to therapists, psychologists, and counselors throughout the state.

The North Dakota Behavioral Health Planning Council monitors, reviews, and evaluates the “allocation and adequacy of mental health and substance abuse services in North Dakota.”  They assess wellness and recovery with a family-driven and client-focused approach. The 30 diverse members that comprise this council are appointed by the Governor. They oversee a wide range of issues, including but not limited to recovery, peer mentoring, service delivery, children's issues, and/or advocacy for mental health and substance abuse issues.

For assistance in navigating treatment for substance abuse, call 24/7 Recovery Talk at 1-844-44-TALK2.
