The State of Mental Health in Washington
Washington currently ranks 44th in the United States for mental healthcare. The Washington State Department of Social and Health Services, along with the Washington State Healthcare Authority (HCA), are responsible for improving their current mental healthcare system, and for providing the education, resources, and services necessary to build resilience in their communities. Currently, many mental healthcare and specialty services requires a referral from a primary care provider (PCP) or Regional Support Network (RSN). The HCA determines the standard of care that all Washington residents can expect when they seek treatment from a licensed counselor or therapist.
Currently, the HCAis working on establishing a strong integrative care model between physical and behavioral care services. This model has been deemed vital to improving accessibility in all phases of mental illness, from prevention, to treatment and recovery. The HCA aims to ensure that all residents have access to the resources that promote their well-being and ability to prosper. This includes access to therapists, psychologists, and counselors throughout the state.
