When I was growing up in Germany, both of my parents were survivors of brutal wars and had invisible scars of chronic sadness and angry outbursts; I learned from a young age on to be an attentive listener and observant observer of human interactions; this life-long interest created a perpetual curiosity and deep empathy for mankind.
