Given I work as a professor at Grand Valley State University, I only see clients on Wednesdays.
My clients describe me as:
Warm, direct, open, non-judgmental, caring, and honest. I try my best to be as neutral as possible and help both partners have their voices heard.
Something to know about my approach is:
Although I tailor my approach to each couple I work with, I predominantly use Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy, which has been shown to lead to significant improvement in nearly 75% of couples. I do extended 75-minute sessions with couples.
Together, we will:
Work on building a stronger relationship between you and your partner. I will help you learn tangible skills you can use to help your relationship, and I also aim to help you and your partner feel closer and more connected with one another.
I specialize in working with people who:
Come from diverse backgrounds with respect to age, race, ethnicity, religion, gender, and sexual orientation. I also work with couples in many different types of relationships, including dating/pre-marital, long-term/married, and open/non-monogamous.
I became a therapist because:
I am passionate about helping couples in their relationships. All of my research in my role as a professor at GVSU is focused in couples work as well.
Something that stands out about where I offer therapy is:
I conduct 75-minute sessions with couples, as the extra time is critical to working through breakthroughs that may get cut off in 50-min sessions.
More about me and my practice:
Given I am a full-time professor in the psychology department at Grand Valley State University, I only work with a limited number of couples and only work on Wednesdays.
