3 Reasons Why Now is the Time to Start Therapy

Thinking about Therapy?

There has never been a better time to start therapy. Due to the COVID19 virus, every therapist from all over the world is now just a click away. And let’s be honest, while being holed up with your loved ones is great…we also all need some time to ourselves. So how can therapy help you right now?

  1. Stress has been amplified. We have now suddenly taken all of our worlds and thrown them into our house. Gone are the days of compartmentalizing in the same way we were able to do before. There are no real breaks or transitions from one activity to the next. No more de-stressing on your drive home from work by listening to podcasts. Shoot, even Mondays don’t feel like Mondays anymore because every day is the same. Therapy can help give you tools and coping-skills to maneuver these changes and look at your situation from an outside perspective. When we are in all the chaos, it can be difficult to see outside of it. Even therapists need their own therapists for this reason.

  2. Our feelings are heavy. Most of us have been through some pretty heavy stuff within our lifetime and while this isn’t the same situation (the majority of us have not been through a pandemic), the feelings it’s bringing up may be some familiar uncomfortable feelings you’ve had in the past. There is a collective grief we all are experiencing and we need a safe space to talk about it. Your therapist will give you permission to feel what you are feeling right now and we are able to do that from an unbiased and objective stance, unlike our friends and family members are able to give us.

  3. We don’t have too many constants right now. There is a saying, “The only constant in life is change” and that is particularly true right now. Nothing is the same. Our mood may shift from moment to moment, what we are told to do or not do is changing daily, the length of time for staying at home keeps extending. We have no control. Your therapist is a constant in your life no matter what is going on. Seeing your therapist at a consistent time each week or so will help you to build your routine, provide some relief, and give you time to take care of yourself through this all.

Doesn’t sound too bad, does it? I will say too that several clients who have been coming to therapy consistently before the pandemic have expressed that they feel they are coping with this situation way better than they would have previously without therapy. And some are doing so well they have actually decreased their sessions because they are coping consistently well on their own for longer periods. That’s what we want for you too. What do you have to lose?
