What are the types of mental health therapy?

There are many different approaches to therapy. Some focus on the kind of analysis that is done. Four popular approaches are:

  • Psychoanalysis
  • Psychodynamic therapy
  • Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical behavioral therapy (DBT)

Some approaches to therapy focus on the issues you want to discuss. These include:

  • Marriage or relationship counseling

There are other approaches to therapy that offer different experiences to express and understand yourself. These include:

  • Art therapy
  • Music therapy 
  • Narrative therapy 
  • Dance therapy 
  • Drama therapy
  • Wildlife therapy
  • Therapy with horses or other animals

Finally, there are some other types of therapy focus on the way your body and mind are connected. These include:

  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)
  • Neurofeedback
  • Somatic therapy
