Thinking about whether seeing a therapist is right for you is a great question. Honestly, I think sometimes there is a misconception on why people seek therapy. It can include an array of different reasons.

Perhaps you need a second opinion on an issue that you’re having or would like to increase your coping skills while managing stress. Sometimes therapy is also helpful when you are experiencing a life change such as transitioning to a new job or entering into a new life stage such as getting married or moving out on your own.

A therapist can help you with identifying tools you can utilize to help you with some of the challenges.

Also, there are times when we believe that we have worked through different struggles or traumas that have occurred in our lives previously, but sometimes the effects reappear during situations in our friendships or relationships. An example could be if you didn’t see positive loving relationships growing up. Perhaps while in a current relationship, you notice that it’s difficult for you to communicate or certain behaviors from your partner seem to trigger you and you aren’t sure why.

These are examples of when a therapist can be helpful to uncover why these certain things are happening.

I believe that currently, people are becoming more and more open to seeing a therapist. It can be very beneficial to have a different perspective from someone who is far removed from you and your family.

A therapist will not tell you what you should do in your life but rather explore with you different options to manage or solve your challenges. I also believe it’s important to note that sometimes a therapist and client can have difficulty connecting and that is okay.

Therapists understand that it is important to have a connection and alignment during treatment in order for it to be successful. There is nothing wrong with telling your therapist that you don’t believe it is a good fit. However, it’s also good to give it a try.

Please remember that we are coming from different life experiences and perspectives, that can be very valuable to you.
