Narcissism is a complex personality trait that can manifest itself in different ways. The most common form of narcissism is grandiose or overt narcissism, which involves an inflated sense of self-importance, a need for admiration, and an excessive preoccupation with success and power. Other forms of narcissism include vulnerable or covert narcissism, which involves a deep-seated insecurity and a need for excessive admiration, and malignant narcissism, which is characterized by a disregard for others’ feelings, a lack of empathy, and a tendency to manipulate and exploit others.

Grandiose narcissism is often seen as the most extreme form of narcissism and is characterized by an exaggerated sense of self-importance, arrogance, and a need for admiration and special treatment. Those with grandiose narcissism are often seen as egotistical, boastful, and arrogant. They often have an excessive need for attention and approval, and a grandiose sense of entitlement.

Vulnerable narcissism is characterized by feelings of inferiority and insecurity. Those with vulnerable narcissism may have a deep-seated fear of being seen as inadequate or inferior. They may also have a need for excessive admiration and approval from others. Those with vulnerable narcissism may also have difficulty accepting criticism, as they take it personally.

Malignant narcissism is a more extreme form of narcissism that involves a disregard for others’ feelings, a lack of empathy, and a tendency to manipulate and exploit others. Those with malignant narcissism may be highly manipulative and may seek to control others. They may also be quick to anger and lash out at those who do not agree with them.

No matter what type of narcissism someone has, it is important to remember that all types are very damaging to children growing up and often through adulthood. Each type of narcissism can impact the way we connect with others, and interact in the world, and tend to lead to a life of internal struggles such as anxiety, depression, people-pleasing, and more.
