#VoicesOfTherapy: The Counselor Who Got Counseling

Here’s the thing, I’m a strong advocate for counseling. Not just because I love what I do and enjoy helping others. I’m an advocate because I have experienced the benefits of counseling firsthand.

I was just like you…trying to figure things out on my own, trying NOT to seek help from outside sources because my friends and family were enough. Then one day I went to bed, and woke up feeling drained. No matter what I tried my energy was low and all I wanted to do was sleep. I looked in the mirror and the person I saw was not recognizable. I had gained so much weight, I was ashamed. Turns out I had Depression. Me, of all people?!

To everyone else, I didn’t “look” depressed. I was always smiling, cracking jokes, making others happy when inside I was feeling the complete opposite. I tried to “fake it til I made it”, but truth is…I was tired of crying on my closet floor. It was hard to admit, but at that point I knew I needed counseling…so I found one. BEST. DECISION. EVER.

To date, I’m dropping weight, but more importantly, I’m feeling like myself again. Although I personally didn’t need medication to get through my depression, it felt really great to hear an outside perspective from someone who wasn’t my family or friend…but someone I knew was invested in helping me get better.

So still wondering if counseling will work for you? I’ll leave you with the words of Art Miller to decide for yourself, “I’m not telling you it’s going to be easy. I’m telling you it’s going to be worth it.” Trust that you’re worth it and your counselor will be here to help you on your journey.
