What Are Daily Affirmations?

Affirmations are self-statements that help you envision yourself achieving your goals and increase belief in your own abilities. They include reminders of your strengths and skills and are kind of like an internal pep talk. Sometimes the brain can get stuck in ruts that leave you feeling worried, fearful, or negative about the future. You may be focused on perceived weaknesses. You may feel defeated by challenges. Affirmations help the brain overcome these internal barriers so you can keep your thoughts oriented towards problem-solving and ways in which you can move forward. In turn, you are able to stay more motivated, confident, and productive.

Examples of affirmations you can use today include:

  •     I am present in the moment

  •     I am skillful and can solve most problems

  •      I am capable
  •     I have all the resources I need

Tips for Making Your Own Affirmations

  • Be sure you develop affirmations that you truly believe and that add meaning and value to your life. If you don’t believe it, it won’t have as much power for you.

  •      Use the present tense

  •     Say your affirmations out loud so they feel alive and real

  •     Write down your affirmations so you can remember them and keep them top of mind even when you’re having a rough time

Benefits of Affirmations

  •     Affirmations help improve your self-identity and self-concept. You can use this to your advantage to highlight your personal assets, giving you more confidence in your ability to achieve your goals.

  • Over time, repeating your affirmations can start to rewire the brain via a process called neuroplasticity. This shapes your thoughts so that your mental baseline works to your advantage. Your brain falls into the habit of focusing on the content of your affirmations more than it pays attention to self-doubt, worries, and fears. This helps you stay motivated and productive.
