When I was a teacher, I would write “coupons” for students who needed encouragement once they left my room. It was often one for “one hour of belief in ____”, but sometimes would be for confidence, patience, or love. The point being, when they did not believe in themselves, they could borrow some of the faith I have in them (present tense intentional).

The key part of borrowing this faith is that they would use it for the duration of the coupon, kind of like borrowing a library book. It is yours to read and use freely while your loan is active, then it is time to return it and allow someone else to use. Whenever I borrow something and use it, I feel confident; when I return it or pay it forward, I feel connected to that person. When I borrow someone’s belief in me, use it, and pass it on to another person, I feel that same confidence and connection.

When someone compliments you, believe it. Use that compliment – that faith or confidence that they have in you. And if you do not feel comfortable taking it for keeps, borrow it, and pass it on to the next person that can use it.
