If you live in the bible belt like I do, you are probably seeing signs everywhere about attending Easter services. Here in Texas, people advertise their church in their front yard!  As someone who was rasied Catholic and has experienced religious trauma, I  understand how these signs can be triggering.

Religious trauma is complex. It is layered with the dynamics of family and self identity. It can have a devastating effect on your  self worth and how you see the world. Often times it leads to seeing yourself and others as good or bad. It can be challenging to break way from beliefs and traditions if your family is still highly involved in religious practices and you might feel judged. This week may be particularly hard if your family is focused on religious traditions. You might feel isolated, ashamed or misunderstood.

Here are some common signs and symptoms of religious trauma:

  • depression and anxiety
  • difficulty forming healthy relationships
  • pervasive feelings of guilt or shame
  • feeling isolated
  • poor boundaries
  • delayed social milestones
  • perfectionism
