EMDR is a specialized therapy that helps people process traumatic or distressing memories. It uses bilateral stimulation which involves engaging both sides of the body or brain through eye movements, tapping, sounds, or other rhythmic left-right stimulation. This process can help the brain reprocess memories so they feel less emotionally charged and support a shift from internalized negative beliefs about yourself toward beliefs that feel more adaptive and true.
EMDR is primarily used for trauma and PTSD, but it may also help with anxiety, depression, panic attacks, grief, phobias, and recent stress. It can be especially helpful when distress feels connected to a past experience or when a recent event continues to carry a strong emotional charge.
Sometimes people worry that what they experienced was not "bad enough" for EMDR, but EMDR can be useful for any memory or experience that still feels unresolved, painful, or disruptive. Many people experience significant relief in fewer sessions than traditional talk therapy.
EMDR follows a structured eight-phase process. Early sessions focus on getting to know you, understanding your history, identifying treatment goals, and building grounding or relaxation skills so you feel more prepared before trauma reprocessing begins.
When you are ready, EMDR may involve recalling distressing memories while using bilateral stimulation, such as eye movements, tapping, or sounds, to help the brain process the memory in a new way. During this process, your therapist may ask you to rate how distressing the memory feels using a 0–10 scale. The goal is for the memory to feel less emotionally charged and more resolved, ideally moving toward little or no distress. Sessions also include time for reflection, closure, and integration after processing.
