#VoicesOfTherapy: The Therapist-Client Relationship

1 minute Elaine Hess Written by Elaine Hess Published 01/22/20

I have been in and out of therapy for several years through my graduate school experience and transitioning to a full-time psychologist.

Our graduate program encouraged us to seek our own treatment to understand our selves more deeply. The most profound experience I had was working for two years with an attachment-oriented therapist.

Through my work with this kind and patient therapist I learned about the dynamics that I bring into my relationships, personal and professional, and how to chart a different path when it serves me.

I believe wholeheartedly that my work in my personal therapy has made me a better therapist, both in having a felt sense of what has helped me, but also in deeply understanding the vulnerability that one feels when we reach out for help and reveal ourselves to someone. It is a leap of faith when we put ourselves in front of a therapist to work on our most enduring problems, and that is why I believe that fit and a foundation of trust and safety are vital to the beginning of any therapeutic relationship.
